Siliguri, Feb 28: The indefinite hunger and general strike, called by the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) to protest the proposed introduction of Sixth Schedule status for Darjeeling hills, may be withdrawn this evening, GJM spokesperson Binoy Tamang said here today.

''Talks are on with the West Bengal government to pressurise the Centre not to introduce the Sixth Schedule in the Darjeeling Hills and we are positive that the Bill, currently under consideration of the Parliamentary Standing Committee, will not be passed in Parliament during this Budget Session. Therefore, we can take a decision on withdrawing the hunger and general strike by this evening,'' Mr Tamang said.

The GJM agitators, on a hunger strike near Subash Ghisingh's guest house at Pintail village since February 17, are of the opinion that the Sixth Schedule would not be suitable for the Hills. The GJM also wants removal of Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council administrative head Subash Ghisingh from his post.
