Bangkok, Feb 27: Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra living in self-exile abroad since his ouster in September 19, 2006 military coup d'etat is set to return to Bangkok within days, Thai Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama said. However, unnamed close political aides of the ousted leader were quoted in newsreports today saying Mr Thaksin would return tomorrow morning to Bangkok from Hong Kong.
Mr Noppadon, who was Mr Thaksin's legal advisor before joining the government, said he met the former prime minister last week in China. Mr Noppadon was Mr Thaksin's spokesman in Thailand and contested the December 23, 2007 parliament elections to restore democracy as a member of the People Power Party (PPP) which is backed by Mr Thaksin and leads the ruling coalition.
On his return, the ousted Thai leader is expected to appear before the courts to answer charges of misuse of public office for personal gain during his tenure in office.
