Guwahati, Feb 27 (UNI) Several student, youth and civil society organisations of Assam came together in Guwahati today to oppose the Oil India Limited's (OIL) proposed seismic survey in the Brahmaputra river bed, maintaining that such a survey would lead to mass devastation for the state.
Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) leader Manoj Baruah said the meeting resolved to oppose the proposed seismic survey in the Brahmaputra as such a survey would adversely impact the river, which was vitally linked to the life and culture of Assam.
The survey would adversely affect the fishermen and people on the river banks, as well as the eco-system of the state, the meeting pointed out.
Mr Baruah informed that the organisations had decided to submit a memorandum on the issue to the President, Prime Minister, Oil Minister and Chief Minister, besides organising public meetings to raise awareness against the seismic survey.
The AJYCP had organised today's meeting, participated by eleven organisations, inlcuding student bodies of Moran, Mootock, Tai-Ahom, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity and other groups.
