Change in coal and lignite blocks leasing policy on anvil
New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) The Government is considering a change in the present policy of leasing the lignite and coal blocks with the object of bringing more transparency in the system, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
Minister of State for Coal Dasari Narayana Rao in a written reply said the Government is contemplating to introduce a system of auctioning through competitive bidding for allocation of such blocks by making amendment in the the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.
Dr Rao said the Government in no way is going to deprive the State Government the rights mentioned in the Act to utilise their mineral resources as per their priorities.
He said even now the State Governments need the prior approval from the Centre for granting of mining lease in respect of coal and lignite, and other minerals included in the first schedule of the Act.
It is proposed to transfer the entire resources raised through competitive bidding to the concerned State Government where the coal block is located, he said.
