Srinagar Feb 27: People still feel insecure in Khundroo and other nearby villages in south Kashmir, where devastating fire in the 21 Field Ammunition Depot destroyed thousands of Bofors and other explosive device in August last year. People of these affected villages found a number of unexploded shells after the incident.

A police spokesman said a live Bofors tank shell was found by the villagers at Khundroo. However, Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) of the police was immediately informed and the shell was defused. More than two dozen people, including a senior Army officer and army fire fighthers were killed in the incident which occurred on August 11 last year. About half a dozen civilians were killed and wounded after the area was declared safe by the authorities. The defence authorities pressed into service about one hundred BDS to defuse the unexploded shells before allowing people enter the affected villages.
