Kolkata, Feb 26 (UNI) Planning to invest 500 million dollars in expanded WiMax business in the country, Tata Communications has targeted to reach 40 cities and 300 towns in the next three years.

The company, which is coming in a big way with its Wimax business--both for retail and enterprise customers-- will start rolling out the expanded service in all the metros this year.

"We have planned to make 500 million dollar investment in WiMax business in the country over the next three years. The process has already started in Bangalore and will be introduced in all the metro cities this year," senior Vice-President, Corporate Strategy Srinivasa Addepalli said here today.

While retail service would be extended in 40 cities, the company would go for catering to enterprise customers in 300 towns, he said.

In keeping with its business commitment to retail customers, the company would set up up 2,000 more sales centres across the country this year itself in addition to the existing 700.

"While moving around with laptop, one needs a hotspot for WiMax connectivity. We will set up such hotspots in all these places," Mr. Addepally said.

Following the integration of Tata Group's five telecommunication subsidiaries--VSNL, VSNL International, Teleglobe, Tata Indicom Enterprise Business Unit and Cipris--Tata Communications has already announced that it would pump in two billion dollars over the next three years on global expansion with specific focus on the new world of IP, MPLS, Ethernet and managed services.

Tata Communications, which is part of the India-Western Europe-Middle East (I-ME-WE) consortium building a cable that connects India to France via the Middle East, will also invest 50 million dollars in the Seacom Ltd. submarine cable project which will link several African countries to international cable networks, Mr. Addepally said.

The company has expanded its Virtual Private Network (VPN) services to China, in a bid to offer additional reach to its international and Indian customers, by entering into an agreement with China Enterprise Netcom Corporation Ltd (China Entercom), a value-added telecommunication services and integrated IT solutions provider.

The move would enable Tata Communications to serve global and India MNC customers with deep reach into both India and China and broad reach around the world.
