Railways to create non-lapsable NE Rail Development Fund: Lalu

New Delhi, Feb 26 (UNI) A non-lapsable Northeast Rail Development Fund will be created, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said today.

In his Railway Budget 2008-09 presented in the Lok Sabha, Mr Prasad said he would request Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to decide the funding of National projects in the Northeastern Region (NER) through 25 per cent funds from the Railways Gross Budgetary support and 75 per cent from the Finance Ministry.

He said the Railways have sought additional funds to the tune of Rs 1712 crore from the Finance Ministry for the national projects of Jiribam-Imphal road, Dimapur-Kohima, Azra-Byrnihat and Kumarghat-Agartala new lines, Bogibeel Rail-cum-road bridge and Lumding-Silchar-Jiribam and Rangia-Murkongselek gauge conversion along with Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla project from Jammu and Kashmir.

He said the new lines of Manu-Ambassa of Kumarghat in Agartala were likely to be completed soon.

The new projects for the laying of new railway lines between Agartala-Sabroom and Bairabhi-Sairang (Aizawl) have also been proposed in the budget.

Apart from this, the Sivok-Rangpo (Sikkim) new lines were being processed for approval, the Railway Minister added.
