55 blocks of Haryana declared as highly exploited areas
Chandigarh, Feb 26 (UNI) The Central Ground Water Board has declared 55 blocks of Haryana as highly exploited areas, including all the six development blocks of Karnal district, in the wake of depleting water table.
A Board spokesman today said among these blocks, Karnal block had already been notified as a dark area in the year 2003 because of depleting water table. The other five blocks of the district would also be notified as dark areas shortly.
In such areas, he said, no new tubewell could be installed without the approval of central authority.
The District Administration had been asked to get a survey of all tubewells of the district conducted for their registration. Also, this would help in getting information about ground water.
He said Karnal, being located on the banks of river Yamuna, the excess water in the river during the rainy season should be utilised and conserved.
Meanwhile, a spokesman of Karnal District Administration said all effective steps would be taken to recharge the ground water and plants would be set up in all government buildings and commercial complexes for recharge of ground water. The holders of residential plots would be asked to set up similar plants for recharge of ground water in their areas. Besides, the village ponds would be made more deep for the same purpose.
