New Delhi, Feb 25 (UNI) Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss today said yoga was making a new niche in the healthcare sector due to modern hospital treatments proving expensive affairs for the general public.
Noting the growing popularity and enthusiasm for yoga all over the world, particularly in the US, Canada, England and Germany, for its physical, physiological and psychological healing benefits, the Minister said several researches and studies on yoga were going on in various medical institutions and research centres both at the national and international level so that the benefits of this unique form of treatment could be availed at a larger level.
He called upon yoga institutions and departments in the country to organise a National Yoga Week event simultaneously and make it a truly national event while inaugurating the National Yoga Week-2008 organised by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY).
"Yoga converts distress to de-stress and disease to ease," he said, adding that "Yoga practices help in alleviating distress and thus produces therapeutic benefits and also has the potential to strengthen inner vigour." Due to modernisation and busy and hectic schedules of the people, the significance of the holistic system of health care had greatly increased, he said.
Launching the National Yoga Week, a mass awareness programme for achieving health, happiness and harmony through yoga, Dr Ramadoss expressed the hope that possible collaborations could be explored at multilateral fronts for systematic development of yoga in all its aspects at the regional and global levels.
Eminent yoga experts, professionals and experts of allied sciences will share their knowledge during the week.
Mrs Anita Das, Secretary, AYUSH, Dr R K Srivastava, DGHS and senior ministry officials were present at the function organised in technical collaboration with DGHS and WHO.
The Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga is engaged in multifarious and multidimensional activities and programmes related to yoga to bring it into the mainstream of the health care delivery system. As part of its initiative, the institute is offering Yoga Therapy and Research Centres in Government and Tertiary Hospitals of Modern medicine.
