Demand for car in dowry not met; groom refuses to marry

Jammu, Feb 24 (UNI) A wedding function was cancelled near Gangyal here as the groom demanded a car in dowry from the parents of the bride.

He refused to marry the girl yesterday, whom he met while working with a bank in Delhi.

The girls family had come to Jammu to marry off their daughter with the Kashmiri youth.

''We came here for the wedding ceremony of our daughter and staying with one of our relatives,'' girl's father Roop Krishan told newspersons.

He said his daughter had met Ajay Razdan, resident of Janipur area here, in Delhi.

''We fulfilled all the wishes of his family since the couple got engaged. All arrangements were made to welcome the 'baratis' but at the eleventh hour, the groom demanded a car in dowry and refused to marry unless his demand was met,'' Mr Krishan said.

He said the groom did not turn up for the wedding ceremony, instead his parents visited the venue and made the demand.
