Fatehpur, Feb 20 (UNI) Scores of policemen were among over 24 people wounded in a firing between police and farmers at the district court arena here today.
Irked over the farmer leader Narsingh Patel's apprehension, a mob opened fired at the police at court precincts.
According to Police Superintendent K K Sippal, Patel had been given only one-day permission for agitation at the district court.
However, he sat on an indefinite agitation and even refused to talk to the district administration and district panchayat president.
When police arrested Patel for violating the orders, his supporters opened fired at the police.
Seeing the situation getting out of control, police fired in the air and shot tear gas shells to disperse the mob.
In the ensuing firing, several people, including police personnel, were wounded.
The injured were rushed to hospital. However, no arrest was made yet.
Police in strength had been garrisoned to prevent any untoward incident.
The farmers leader had been decrying the 'stepmotherly' treatment of the Uttar Pradesh and central government towards farmers in Doaba of Fatehpur, which was facing a similar situation like that in drought-hit Bundelkhand.
