Chandigarh, Feb 20 (UNI) An innovative programme combining moral values and civic duties in the educational curriculum, with the objective of making school children caring and concerned citizens, got an enthusiastic response from the teaching community and public alike at an impressive function at Museum and Art Gallery here today.
It was launched with an appeal by Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator General (Retd.) S F Rodrigues to contribute with a practical and positive approach, towards this major social endeavour.Sharing his concern about the fall in moral standards in every sphere of activity, General Rodrigues said that "we claim to be the inheritors of a rich heritage, with a 5000 year old civilization, but we somehow missed incorporating essential values in our present education system".
"We follow the education system of the British Raj which they tailored to suit their own needs. It does not encourage our children to apply their minds and to think for themselves and hence they are not in position to comprehend the real human values of contemporary India", he added.
General Rodrigues said it was, therefore, the need of the hour to restructure our system of education so that it related to basic human values with the focus on one's own personal value system, inculcation of sense of social responsibilities and duty towards the community and the nation.
