Colombo, Feb 20: At least three government soldiers were killed when a group of Tamil Tiger rebels attacked a military picket point at Dambekote on the Kataragama-Buththala main highway in Southern Sri Lanka this morning.
''Three army soldiers who were on duty at the picket point were killed due to the attack and it is believed that the terrorists also sustained damages in security forces retaliation,'' the Defence Ministry said in a report. It added that additional troops have already been rushed to tighten the security in the area. Meanwhile, the Military claimed that it has thwarted a 'pre-dawn LTTE offensive' today in the general area north of Parappakandal in the north-western Mannar district.
Heavy fighting backed by long-range artillery duels broke out when the troops 'counter attacked' an LTTE offensive to recapture the areas they lost to the army at Parappakandal couple of days ago.
''The LTTE has suffered heavy casualties, with scores believed killed, security sources said. Meanwhile, military sources said that four soldiers have sustained injuries during confrontation ahead of LTTE defences this morning,'' the Defence Ministry said.
