Mumbai, Feb 20 (UNI) Stylish middle order batsman V V S Laxman, who has been named as the captain of the Hyderabad team in the DLF Indian Premier League, was today praised for his incredible team spirit by P K Iyer, the CEO of the Hyderabad franchise.
Mr Iyer said that a batsman of Laxman's calibre had withdrawn his 'icon' status for the Hyderabad team, which has enabled them to have a bigger budget for buying players.
Had Laxman become the icon player for Hyderabad, he would have got 15 per cent more salary than the next-highest-priced cricketer.
Moreover, Hyderabad have decided to make Laxman the captain of the side.
Mr Iyer said, ''He went ahead and gave up the icon status in the interest of the team.'' ''It was Laxman, who said that I will keep the team ahead so that the team would have a larger budget and he didn't mind not being an icon as long as he led Hyderabad,'' he added.
