Fatehabad, Feb 20 (UNI) A court at Tohana town in this district today convicted three persons, including a doctor couple, under the Pre-Natal Sex Determination (PNDT) Act for sex determination of foetus and sentenced them to one year's imprisonment each.
Those convicted including doctor couple Rajesh Goyal and his wife Darshana Goyal and the manager of their hospital Geet Mittal were also slapped a fine of Rs One thousand each.
According to reports an ASHA worker tipped off Dr Hira Lal Gupta, Incharge of general hospital at Jakhal that a woman Sukhvinder Kaur who had five daughters and was pregnant for the sixth time, would undergo tests for determination of the sex of her unborn child in Tohana-based Parkash Mission Hospital on February 14,2006.
The raiding party including senior doctors then raided the basement of the Parkash Mission Hospital at Tohana that day, when the sex determination of the woman was in progress.
The doctor couple, however, managed to give them a slip.
The raiding party sealed the ultrasound machine installed in the hospital and filed a criminal case under the PNDT Act against the doctor couple and their close relative Geet Mittal, who is manager of the hospital.
The Judicial Magistrate, Tohana Sudeep Goyal, who heard the case, found the trio guilty of the offence under the PNDT Act, and sentenced them to one year's imprisonment each and fine of Rs 1000 each.
