Berhampur, Feb 18 (UNI) More than 50 landmines laid by fleeing Naxalites around the Gosama hill were defused by a bomb disposal squad today.
Police said a bomb disposal squad, which arrived at the site from Bhubaneswar under the leadership of P K Nanda, defused the landmines this afternoon.
Security personnel encircled the naxalites numbering about 300 holed up in the Gosama hill since Saturday and intensive combing operation was on.
Police said the Naxalites burnt ten vehicles they had taken with them after attacking the police stations and armoury at Nayagarha and kept them on the foothills of the Gosama hill.
The vehicles included one three wheeler, two motor cycles, one pick up van, three 609 model trucks and two 407 model trucks.
During the combing operation the security personnel seized huge cache of arms and ammunition, left by the Naxalites in the jungles.
The arms and ammunition included 1000 mt of explosive wire, two tube launchers, around 50 rifle bayonet, one stengun, one carbine, 12 twelve bore guns, more than 20,000 live cartridges, a huge cache of live bombs, 20 grenades, four SLR, 150 303 rifles, one pistol, 40 kgs of bomb splinters and more than 200 SLR magazines.
Though police refused to disclose the number of bodies of Naxalites they had recovered, a local tribal said around ten bodies of the Naxalites were lying in various parts of the hill.
Orissa Director General of Police Gopal Nanda and other senior officials were camping and monitoring the combing operations.
The DGP said the combing operation would continue till the Naxalites were vanquished.
The security personnel would launch their operation from the other side of Gosama hill tomorrow morning, sources said.
