Lucknow, Feb 17(UNI) Over 4000 athletes, including 500 officials, would be seen in action in the 6th Uttar Pradesh State Games, starting from tomorrow.
UP Olympic Association(UPOA) president and union minister of state for steels Akhilesh Das will inaguruate the week long state games here at the K D Singh Babu stadium.
UPOA general secretary Anandeshwar Pandey said as many as 35-40 events in disciplines like athletics, hockey,weightlifting, judo, tennis, boxing, kabaddi, basketball,volleyball, table tennis, wrestling, wushu, netball, badminton,handball, football,kho-kho, rowing, kayaking and canoeing, fencing, yachting and gymnastics would be organized during the week-long Games.
The some events will be organized at the Guru Gobind Sports College, KD Singh 'Babu' Stadium, Gomti Nagar Stadium, Chowk Stadium, in Lucknow while Kayaking, canoeing and gymnastics events would be held in Allahabad.
'This time the Games would be better organized,'' said Pandey, adding, ''It's an attempt to regularize the State Games, which had many an interruptions in previous years.'' UPOA's senior vice-president Ranjit Singh Judeo claimed that the selection of the disciplines for the State Games was done as per the availability of the infrastructure in the State.
'We don't have an all-weather pool so we are not going to organize aquatics and similar is the case of the shooting event as we do not have shooting range,'he added.
UPOA treasurer Dr Vijay Sinha also informed that a sum of Rs 35 lakh was required for the State Games and so far they had received Rs 5 lakh from their president Dr Akhilesh Das.
'We have also requested the State Government for the financial support to the event and we are hopeful of getting it soon,' he said.
