Scheduled Castes students to be encouraged in sports

Chandigarh, Feb 17 (UNI) Haryana Government has introduced a new scheme to encourage the participation of Scheduled Castes students in sports activities in the Government and Government Aided Colleges of the State.

While stating this here today, an official spokesman said that under the new scheme introduced by the State Government, the incentives to the students would be given in the shape of diet at the rate of Rs 60 per head per day for 100 days in a year and a sports kit per student per annum costing of about Rs 2000 for the purpose of track suits, sports shoes, vests and shorts etc. in a year.

He said that a sum of Rs 14 lakh had been earmarked for 175 students belonging to scheduled castes categories of Government and Government Aided Colleges in order to encourage their participation in sports activities during the current financial year.

The Spokesman said that any regular student belonging to scheduled castes categories who participated as team members in any of the recognized discipline at inter college or inter university or state or national level events and not claimed such assistance during the relevant period under any other similar scheme of the Government would be eligible to get benefit under this new scheme.

This amount would be distributed to the eligible students as per demands or requirements of the Government and Government aided colleges of the State, he added.
