Ludhiana, Feb 16: In one of the biggest jail escapes in Punjab, eight tribal undertrials, all belonging to the dreaded "kachcha gang'' and accused in several cases of murders and dacoity, absconded last night from the Centrl jail here, police sources today said.
The undertrials had been taken to a Kapurthala court for hearing when one of them managed to flee from the court premises itself.
Police tried to nab him but in vain, jail superintendent Kuldeep Singh told UNI.
Later, when the rest of the hardcore criminals were brought back to the jail, one of them escaped while alighting from the police vehicle. While the policemen on duty ran after him, the others took advantage of the confusion and also escaped, he said.
A case has been registered against some half a dozen police personnel, including the jail guard and efforts to nab the fugitives were on, the jail superintendent said.
