Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 16 (UNI) The Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) would go ahead with the hartal called on February 19 against skyrocketing of prices of essential commodities in Kerala, its convener P P Thankachan said today.
Talking to reporters after the UDF meeting here, Mr Thankachan said there was no change in the UDF stand that prompted for calling the hartal as the same situation still prevailed.
He ridiculed the government's request to withdraw the hartal, saying that the price of rice had doubled.
Claiming that such a price hike had never been seen during the previous UDF government, Mr Thankachan alleged that the LDF government had miserably failed to contain the price rice of essential commodities in the state. The government should take effective measure to control it,'' he added.
Mr Thankachan further said since the LDF government had declared holiday for educational institutions in Kottayam in connection with the CPI(M) State Conference there, it should declare a public holiday on the day of the hartal also.
He said the UDF had exempted emergency services, marriages and religious functions from the purview of hartal.
