EC directs Tripura university to suspend lecturer
Agartala, Feb 16 (UNI) Tripura Chief Electoral Officer G S G Ayyangar today directed the Central University authority to suspend a lecturer accused of participating in political activities.
Political Science lecturer Alok Bhattacharjee was accused of campaigning for the Congress candidates in several parts of Agartala thus violating the service rule.
However, the varsity registrar said the CU was an autonomous body and hence its employees were allowed to participate in the political activities.
Meanwhile, Mr Ayyangar stated that after getting detail report from the Returning Officer, the registrar was directed to suspend the lecturer.
According to the Election Commission of India, no government employee can participate in the political activities.
''As the university was Central government aided, its employees were not allowed to participate in any poll campaigns,'' Dr Ayyangar said adding that the registrar would have to face dire consequences if he did not take any action against the lecturer.
