University increases prize money for sportspersons

Amritsar, Feb 15 (UNI) To further give a boost to sports, the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has increased the prize money for its sportspersons.

According to GNDU Sports Director Kanwaljit Singh, All India Inter-University tournament winners would now receive Rs 7,500 instead of Rs 1500. The second position holders in this category would get Rs 5000 instead of Rs 1100 while the third position holders would receive Rs 2500 instead of Rs 1000. Likewise winners of National sports meets would now receive Rs 5000 instead of Rs 1000. The runners up in this category would get Rs 3000 instead of Rs 700 while third position holders would receive Rs 2000 in place of Rs 500.

Winners of international sports meets would get Rs 25,000 while the runners-up would receive Rs 20,000. Third position holders would get Rs 15,000.

GNDU is the only University in India which had won the coveted Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy for 20 times. It has produced 5 Padmashrees, 27 Arjuna Awardees, one Dhroncharya and one Dhyan Chand Awardee.

Dr Singh said to promote sports in the colleges and University a number of facilities are being created at the University campus. Wooden flooring and acostic treatment in the Indoor Multipurpose, Gymnasium, Velodrome for Cycling, Indoor Pistol Shooting Range, Boats for Water Sports in Canoeing, Kayaking, Yachting and Rowing at Pong Dam, Talwara or Sultanpur Lodhi are being provided very shortly.

Regular Canoeing and Kayaking coach has been attached with the university by the Punjab Police for water sports.

The colleges affiliated to the University, which are spread over six districts bordering Pakistan, are storehouse of talent in sports and other youth activities, Dr Singh added.
