Hyderabad, Feb 15 (UNI) The Floor leader of the Opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) D Veerabhadra Rao today alleged that the Congress government had failed to maintain law and order in the state, making the ''police officials its slaves''.
Participating in a discussion on motion of thanks on the Governor's address in the Legislative Council, Mr Rao said the police were performing their duties on the ''advice'' of ministers, ruling MLAs and local Congress leaders, forgetting the problems of the common man.
''According to National Crime Record Bureau 2006 report, the state occupied first place in political murders, rapes, white collar offences and kidnappings. Police officials have become the brokers for the realtors in dealing with the land disputes. There was no protection to the common man,'' he said, adding that the incidents of attacks on media personnel have increased in the state since the Congress came to power.
Alleging that it was a shame for the police department for failing to arrest the accused in Ayesha murder case in Vijayawada, the TDP leader said terrorists were having a free run triggering bomb blasts. The state police had failed to keep track of their movements.
Pointing out that there was no control on the increasing prices of essential commodities and black marketing, Mr Rao alleged that the government was closing down its schools to promote corporate institutions in education sector.
He demanded that the government must fill up the vacancies in all government departments and fulfill the promises made during the 2004 elections.
