DAV, Jalandhar retains Nehru Champion Colleges Hockey title

New Delhi, Feb 15 (UNI) Ajay Kumar and Jujhar Singh slammed a brace each as defending champion DAV, Jalandhar extended their lease over the title routing Jawaharlal Nehru PG College, Bhopal 5-2 to lift the SAIL-Nehru Champion colleges Hockey Championship here today.

The final of the 15th edition of the tournament was dominated by the DAV team, who in the process set up a record by lifting the trophy for the ninth time.

The winners kept their rivals under pressure most of the time and took the lead in the 19th minute through Ajay Kumar.

Ajay was again in the thick of action in the 29th minute as he converted a penalty corner to give his team a 2-0 lead but, Satish Kumar reduced the margin for the Bhopal team three minutes before half-time.

In the second half, Satish Kumar scored again four minutes after the re-start, but DAV completely dominated thereafter, scoring three more goals through Major Singh and Jujhar Singh to emerge victorious.

Meanwhile, in the play-off for the third place, Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar beat SGGS, Chandigarh, 2-1.

The match, which saw the two teams locked 1-1 at full time, was decided in the 10th minute of extra-time.

Sukhminder Singh and Sarwan Singh scored for the winners in the 47th and 80th minutes respectively while Rajesh Kumar scored in the 50th minute for the Chandigarh team.
