Rajkot, Feb 14 (UNI) Defending champion North Zone beat East Zone by 433 runs on the final day of the four-day Duleep Trophy match at the Madhavrao Scindia Grounds here today.
North Zone moved into the final by virtue of their win.
East Zone were shot out for a paltry 243 runs, shortly before the tea break after North Zone set a daunting target of 677 for victory.
North Zone medium pacer V R V Singh, who did not turn up for fielding yesterday due to fever and body pain, today took three of the last four wickets.
Highlight of game was the fourth wicket partnership of 168 runs between A Majumdar and M Vardhan, who carried the score from 70 for three to 238 for four with the former unfortunately run out by substitue Jogindar Sharma. After his departure, East Zone crumbled from 238 for four to 243 for nine, with N Behera not batting as he had retired hurt. Majumdar and Vardhan batted well, scoring 82 and 83 runs respectively. After Majumdar's run out, his partner M Vardhan lost concentration and was caught and bowled by Amit Mishra.
His knock of 83 contained seventeen boundaries. Majumdar's 82 runs were studded with fourteen boundaries.
Earlier, East Zone resumed their second innings at the overnight score of 28 for one with captain S S Das and A Das batting on 18 and two respectively and they added another 23 runs to the overnight score before Uday Kaul behind the stumps accepted a catch, offered by latter off the bowling of V Malik. Skipper S S Das also did not last long and departed after scoring 33 runs, trapped lbw off the bowling of Chetanya Nanda.
Majumdar and Vardhan steadied the sinking ship and added valuable 168 runs for the fourth wicket. After their departure, the ship of the East Zone completely sank and they lost the match by a huge 433 runs.
Medium pacer V R V Singh took three wickets for 46 runs off 11.3 overs. He took three wickets in a span of six balls and conceded only two runs, while Amit Mishra captured two wickets for 37 runs.
V Malik, R Bhatia and C Nanda took one wicket each. East Zone's last four batsmen were out for naught. H Das made four runs.
