Amritsar, Feb 14 (UNI) Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA and former Amritsar Deputy Mayor, Raminder Singh Bolaria passed away in the US early this morning, official sources here said.
Bolaria (51) had been suffering from cancer for quite sometime and had gone to the US for treatment last month after the marriage of his daughter.
He leaves behind his wife, a daughter and son Inderbir Singh, who is a member of the Amritsar Municipal Corporation. His wife and son were by his side when the end came.
Mr Bolaria was active in politics since his days at the prestigious Khalsa College here. He was a member of the NSUI during his college days and later he went on to become the vice president of the Punjab Youth Congress (I) and then of the Congress.
He fought his first assembly poll in 2002 as an independent from the Amritsar South constituency after being denied the Congress ticket, but lost by a narrow margin to the Congress candidate.
Thereafter, he joined the SAD and became its Working Committee member, due to his close proximity with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. In February 2007 he again contested as a nominee of the SAD from Amritsar South and won by a handsome margin.
Mr Badal has expressed shock over the sudden demise of Mr Bolaria. He has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal also condoled the death of the Akali MLA.
According to family sources, the body of Mr Bolaria will be flown to India for the last rites, which will take place in the holy city.
