Mumbai, Feb 13 (UNI) Maharashtra BJP president Nitin Gadkari today stated that the step to arrest Raj Thackeray was taken to divide the Marathi voters of Shiv Sena-BJP.

His statement carries significance as Shiv Sena is considered as the party taking the cause of Marathi 'manoos' while the BJP has its vote bank in Gujaratis and others in the city.

In a release issued here, Mr Gadkari said that if the government wanted to take any action they should have taken on the same day when both Raj and Abu Asim Azmi made the statements which were described as inflammatory and provocative by the government.

Prompt and immediate action could have avoided the tension which prevailed in the metropolis and the state for the last fortnight, he noted.
