Sri Lanka beat India by eight wickets

By Staff

Canberra, Feb 12 : Sri Lanka registered a comprehensive eight wickets win over India in the fifth ODI of the Commonwealth Bank Series.

The Islanders won the match by eight wickets with 12 balls remaining. India lacked the venom in their bowling department and the pacers could not hold to a good line and length, leading to a defeat.

S Sreesanth was the weakest link in the Indian bowling armour as he proved to be very expensive in a match that needed the bowlers to keep things tight for the opposition.

The World Cup finalists cashed in, with makeshift opener Tillekaratne Dilshan belting 62 not out from 59 balls to guide his side home, carrying over from a blistering start given by Sanath Jayasuriya (27, 13b).

Sri Lanka benefited from another reduction in overs and indeed wayward bowling as Jayasuriya let loose, taking S Sreesanth to the cleaners in his first two overs, before two quick wickets somewhat hindered their progress.

However, more wayward bowling and 19 extras along with captain Mahela Jayawardene and Dilshan's unbeaten 85-run stand ensured a convincing win making it rather even in the points table.

India posted a good total of 195-5 with 20-year-old Rohit Sharma being unbeaten on 70 from just 64 balls in the rain-truncated fixture, which was further reduced from 29 to 21 overs.
