Jenjap to be symbol for Tebw-Lappa married women
Itanagar, Feb 12: The Tebw-Lappa women in this hilly state will henceforth wear 'Jenjap' around their necks compulsorily as a symbol of their marital status.
The decision to this effect was unanimously adopted at the seventh annual conference of Aab Tebw and Ato Lappa Welfare Society (TLWS), which concluded at Balijan on Sunday last, informed sources here today.
On the backdrop of call by the intellectuals of Arunachalee society on many occasions to reform the outdated customs and traditions and adopt anything genuinely acceptable to the society to match with the passing time, TLWS took this remarkable decision to make 'Jenjap' (mangalsutra) mandatory for their married women.
The society also made it mandatory for the male members of clan to bear the cost of such items and making it compulsory for every son-in-law to present this item to his new bride as a ritual at the time of solemnising the marriage, sources added.
