Gunners dump Rovers to go five clear

By Staff
London,Feb 12: Arsenal moved five points clear of Manchester United at the top of the Premiership standings on Monday with a 2-0 win over Blackburn at the Emirates Stadium.

Philippe Senderos scored only four minutes into the match and Emmanuel Adebayor added the insurance tally in stoppage time for the Gunners, who will meet Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup at Old Trafford on Saturday. With United and Chelsea both dropping points for the second consecutive weekend, Arsenal once again capitalized and they pounced on Blackburn just four minutes into the game.

An Arsenal corner kick resulted in Eduardo Da Silva crossing for Senderos and he headed it past keeper Brad Friedel to give the Gunners an early lead.

Friedel did well to keep Rovers in the match for stretches of the first half, as Arsenal wasted opportunities to extend its advantage.

The visitors made their way back into the game and pressed for the equalizer early in the second half, but Arsenal was not about to let three big points slip away and they were the stronger side down the stretch.

Alexander Hleb struck the post after taking a pass from Eduardo and Adebayor was denied by a good stop from Friedel before finally putting the game away in stoppage time.

Hleb set the play up by finding the Togo international with a pass and Adebayor drilled his 19th goal of the season into the lower corner.
