{image-machester city_11022008.jpg www.oneindia.com}Bloomberg, Feb 11: Manchester City won at Manchester United for the first time since 1974, recording a 2-1 victory that prevented its rival from regaining the top spot in English soccer's Premier League.

Darius Vassell and Benjani Mwaruwari, on his debut, scored first-half goals at Old Trafford to complete a league double against United following a 1-0 home success in August. United, previously unbeaten at home in the competition this season, got an injury-time reply from Michael Carrick.
We worked ever so hard today and didn't give them much space when they went forward,'' City midfielder Dietmar Hamann told Sky Sports. Every time one of our players lost the ball another player covered and won it back.''

Defending champion United remains in second spot with 58 points from 26 games, two points behind Arsenal, which hosts Blackburn tomorrow. Chelsea has 55 points, and Everton 47 points, while Liverpool moves to 44 ahead of Aston Villa and City because of a superior goal difference.
A minute's silence before today's Old Trafford match -to mark the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster -- was well observed in the stadium, amid concern that some City fans might disrupt it.

Loud bangs could be heard from outside the ground, which media reports said may have been caused by fireworks.
A total of 23 people, including eight United players, were killed in the Feb. 6, 1958, disaster as the club returned from a European Cup game against Red Star Belgrade.

Wreaths were laid by managers Alex Ferguson and Sven-Goran Eriksson before today's game, and United players wore V-neck jerseys in the style of the 1958 team. City also wore specially designed shirts, and neither teams' tops carried sponsors' logos.
United, without suspended striker Wayne Rooney and full-back Patrice Evra, had the first chance when Ryan Giggs tested Joe Hart after seven minutes.

City then started to create opportunities, with Martin Petrov firing over from 20 yards and Stephen Ireland heading at goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.
The visitors, who last won both league games in a season against United 38 years ago, took a 25th-minute lead on Vassell's fourth goal of the campaign. His first shot hit Van der Sar, though he collected the rebound to score.

Hart then stopped a Carlos Tevez effort to maintain City's advantage and Benjani added the second goal one minute before half-time. The former Portsmouth striker, who completed a move last week, flicked a cross from Petrov into the corner of the net.
