KRS threatens 'Jail Bharo' on MSP issue

Bangalore, Feb 11(UNI) Karnataka Raitha Sangh (KRS) today threatened to launch 'Jail Bharo' agitation if the state government fails to concede their demand for Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 1100 for sugar cane.

KRS President K S Puttanaiah, talking to newsmen after a meeting with Governor Rameshwar Thakur, told reporters here that it was demanded atleast Rs 250 per tonne as additional amount to farmers in distress.

Mr Puttanaiah said that the meeting with the Governor remained inconclusive and he (Mr Thakur) had convened another meeting to discuss the issue further on February 15.

The Governor had reportedly told the representatives of KRS that he would announce his final decision on the fixing of fresh MSP on Monday (today), he said.

Stating that the present MSP of sugar cane in the State was Rs 811, he said the government should fix it on par with other states where it is above Rs 1000.

Mr Puttanaiah said that his organisation would launch the Jail Bharo agitation from February 18 if the government failed to concede to various demands including a subsidy of Rs 25,000 per acre of the uncrushed crop.

He claimed that more than one lakh sugarcane growers are likely take part in the 'Jail Bharo' agitation.
