Five of family perish trying to save child's life
Chennai, Feb 11 (UNI) Five members of a family -- three women, a girl and a boy -- drowned, while trying to save a four-year-old from meeting with a watery grave at Kolapunam village in Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu, this evening.
Reports received at the police headquarters here said the victims, hailing from Bangalore, were returning after attending a wedding when the tragedy befell them.
They stopped at a stone quarry pond for a face wash when the child slipped and fell into it.
The five people who jumped into the water one by one to save the baby met with a watery grave, though the child was rescued by the one of the woman, who also drowned.
The deceased were identified as Latha (31), Amudha (29), Gilbert Clove (12), Muniammal (40) and Monisha (10).
Police and fire services personnel rushed to the spot and fished out the bodies and sent for post mortem.
