Meghalaya Dy CM pulled up by EC for code violation
Shillong, Feb 10 (UNI) The Election Commission has issued a notice to Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for violating the election code of conduct for using a VIP red light on his private car.
The state Election Commission issued the notice to Dr Sangma, who is seeking re-election from Ampati constituency in West Garo Hills, after his Honda CRV vehicle was found with the red beacon light at a Congress rally at Garobadha area, West Garo Hills district, on Friday.
''We have asked him to explain why action should not be taken against him for using of red beacon light,'' an election official today said.
The EC has prohibited using of red beacon lights by the Ministers and MLAs during election campaigning.
Earlier, Nationalist Congress Party's Chief Ministerial candidate Purno A Sangma was also under scanner for circulating free CDs of the police firing on September 30, 2005, in Tura and Williamnagar.
The influtential Garo Students' Union (GSU) had lodged a complaint with West Garo Hills District Magistrate-cum- Returning Officer E P Kharbih about the former Lok Sabha Speaker's alleged attempt to gain electoral mileage out of the incidents.
Nine students were killed over the issue of revamping and restructuring the Meghalaya Board of School Education.
