Madurai, Feb 10 (UNI) The first-ever state-level conference of the fledgeling Akhila India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK), floated by actor-politician R Sarath Kumar, began at Viraganur Ring Road here today.
With a vow to cleanse politics, involve people in a corrupt-free administration and strive to bring back the 'Kamaraj rule' in the state, Mr Sarath Kumar hoisted the party flag in front of the conference venue this morning, marking his formal entry to active politics.
Ms Radhika, wife of Mr Sarath Kumar, also a popular Tamil actor and second-in-command of the party, lit the traditional 'Kuthu Vilakku' (oil lamp) at the venue.
Earlier, about 2,000 women supporters of the party took out a procession from the famous Mariyamman Teppakulam (temple tank) at Vandiyur to the conference venue carrying 'Mulaippari' (sprout of nine grains in clay pots) on their heads, a traditional system followed by Tamils during festivals and functions.
Thousands of party workers from various parts of the state congregated in the temple town of Madurai to participate in the conference.
Party supremo Sarath Kumar would announce the vision and ideology of the party during his address at the conference tonight. The conference was expected to pass more than twenty resolutions that would include 'Vision 2025', a plan for the state's development.
Tight security arrangements have been made by the police around the conference venue and in the city.
