Chennai, Feb 10 (UNI) In a humdinger of a contest, Chennai Superstars won the inaugural edition of the ICL 50s, defeating Delhi Jets in a tense final by one wicket with four balls to spare.
This is their second straight victory after the inaugural ICL Twenty20 Championships.
Chennai Superstars skipper R Satish won the toss and decided to field.
Put in to bat, the Delhi Jets managed to put on 240 runs in 48.3 overs. They had a shaky start as opener Sachin Dholpure was back in the pavilion by the seventh over, with the score on 27.
This brought in Abhinav Bali who along with Mohnish Mishra put on a 54 runs partnership for the second wicket to take the Jets to a safer position.
Mishra struck a fine 64 off 68 balls hitting five fours and a six and was the star of the Jets innings.
Abhinav Bali gave him able support, scoring 37 runs from 30 balls.
After the fall of Abhinav Bali, Mishra entered into a 57-run partnership with Abbas Ali to take the score past 130.
Later in the innings, JP Yadav and Ali added a quick 37 to take the score past 175.
Yadav made 45 runs from 56 balls, hitting two sixes and one four.
After the fall off Yadav, the tailenders did not contribute much and the Jets managed to put on 240 runs in 48.3 overs.
Medium pacer Tamil Kumaran claimed five wickets to restrict the Delhi innings.
Chasing a stiff target, Chennai Superstars were off to an appalling start, loosing three wickets witin eight overs on the score on 33.
After the fall of Vasant Sarvana, Hemang Badani entered into a 52-run partnership with V Devendran to take the score past 80 in the 17th over.
Devendran scored 43 off 56 balls hitting two sixes and three boundaries. After the fall of Devendran, Hemang and Harish scored 81 runs off 105 balls taking the score past 166 in the 35th over.
In course of their partnership, Hemang scored 58 off 77 balls hitting three sixes and Harish scored 59 off 73 balls hitting four boundaries.
Chennai Superstars suffered a middle-order slump and were staring down the barrel with the score at 208 for 9 in the 46th over. But all-rounder Tamil Kumaran had other ideas.
He struck 21 balls 38 hitting two sixes and four boundaries to guide his team to victory with 4 balls still to be bowled.
Medium fast bowler Tamil Kumaran of the Chennai Superstars was declared the man of the match while Delhi Jets skipper J P Yadav was declared the Player of the Tournament for his all-round performance.
