New Delhi, Feb 9 (UNI) It was a waiting game for the media that started with a bang but ended with a whimper.
Mediapersons had started assembling at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in large numbers as early as 1700 hrs today as word of scheduled arrival of the CBI team accompanying kidney scam kingpin Santosh Raut, alias Amit Kumar, by Indian flight IC 814 from Kathmandu at 1845 hrs, spread. In their bid to take bytes and shots of the kidney scam accused, who has earned international notoriety ever since the scame came to light, they had started taking vantage points.
But high drama was witnessed soon after the arrival of the flight IC 814 as the CBI team with Dr Amit in tow did a disappearing act, slipping out of the airport without the media getting a whiff of it.
The team, instead of coming out of scheduled Exit II, whisked away Dr Amit from the Haj Terminal, to dodge media glare.
The entire media grew restless and started jostling around the moment an announcement about the arrival of the flight carrying the CBI team and Dr Amit was made. There was a mad scramble all over the airport. They all had their cameras trained and notepads ready at Exit II from where the team was to emerge.
But it was a wait that never ended. The mediapersons were on their toes, but the moment word spread that Dr Amit had already been whisked away from the Haj Terminal, dejection on the faces of the grumpy press persons could be seen from miles.
There was also talk that Dr Amit was being taken to the CBI headquarters with his face covered with a muffler and those co-passengers, who saw him aboard the flight, said his face was totally masked and only his eyes could be seen.
The mediapersons' two-hour wait eventually bore no fruit, making their efforts to get the 'prized' bytes and shots go down the drain.
After a futile wait, all could be seen packing their cameras and leaving the airport with sullen faces.
