Punjab teams dominate day two of Nehru Champion hockey tourney

New Delhi, Feb 9 (UNI) Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, downed SM Singh Mahavidyalaya, Gazipur, 3-2 in an exciting encounter of the 15th SAIL-Nehru Champion Colleges hockey tournament here today.

Punjab teams dominated the day's proceedings as SGGS College, Chandigargh beat MGK Vidhyapith, Varanasi, 4-2 and DAV, Jalandhar blanked SBMS College, Bangalore 4-0.

In a see-saw encounter, SM Singh Mahavidyalaya took an early lead as Amar Nath Ram scored in the eighth minute. Sukhminder Singh equalised for the Jalandhar team, converting a penalty corner in the 17th minute.

The Punjab team raced ahead in the 28th minute through a penalty corner goal by Bikramjeet Singh.

In the second half, Amar Nath scored again to make the score 2-2 before Bikramjeet scored his second in the 43rd minute as Khalsa college emerged victorious.

In other matches, SGGS College, Chandigarh, came back from 0-2 down to beat MGK Vidhyapith, Varanasi 4-2.

The Varanasi team had a dream start as they scored in the fourth and 13th minute to race to a 2-0 lead.

However, the Punjab team dominated the proceedings from then on, scoring four goals to emerge victorious.

In another match, SBMS College, Bangalore hardly put up any resistance as they were swamped 4-0 by DAV College, Chandigargh.
