Chandigarh, Feb 9 (UNI) Supreme Court judge and Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority Justice Ashok Bhan today stressed the need for change in the mindset of the people for empowerment of women.
''Mere lip service to refer the women as Durga would not serve the purpose,, '' Mr Justice Bhan said after inaugurating a summit on women empowerment organised by Haryana State Legal Services Authority and Chandigarh Legal Services Authority, here.
He also expressed his serious concern on the issue of female foeticide and urged the society to treat daughters as well as daughters-in-law at par with the sons.
He said that while the laws were also important, there was a greater need to implement them properly and for a change in the mindset of the society to give women their due share.
To elaborate he said that at a Panchayat meeting that he attended, only one woman was present and when he asked for the reason, many of the men present said "we are Pati Panch", which meant that they were the husbands of the women who were elected as Panch.
He stressed the that under such circumstances, just giving social, political and economic rights to the women can hardly achieve the real goal of empowering them.
Punjab and Haryana High Court judge and Executive Chairman of Haryana State Legal Services Authority (HSLSA) Adarsh Kumar Goel, who presided over the summit, described the issue of women empowerment as of global concern and said that the action plan of HSLSA aimed at creating legal literacy at grassroot level.
