Chennai, Feb 9: Leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly and AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today joined issue with Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and alleged that law and order situation in the state had deteriorated.

Reacting to the Chief Minister's claim that Tamil Nadu remained peaceful and prices of essential commodities were under control, Ms Jayalalithaa, in a statement here, alleged that Mr Karunanidhi has given false information about law and order and price rise to satisfy the Congress party at the Centre and protect his government.

Alleging deterioration of law and order in the state, she said the state, which remained a haven of peace during her regime, had turned into a ''hunting ground for the outlawed LTTE'' and other extremist and naxalist forces after the DMK came to power in May 2006.

Detailing the murder incidents that had taken place in the state in the past 20 months, she alleged that the DMK was adopting a soft approach towards the supporters of LTTE and other extremist forces.

The Chief Minister who offered condolences on the death of LTTE leaders Anton Balasingam and S P Tamizhchelvan, could not be expected to be firm against the proscribed LTTE and other extremist forces, she said.

On the price rise, she accused the Chief Minister of giving false information to mislead the people. The AIADMK leader gave a comparision of prices of varius essential commodities, during the DMK rule in 2006 and now. Prices of these commodities have increased by 33 per cent to 118 per cent in the last two years, she charged.
