Hooghly, Feb 8: Singur Krishi Jami Raksha Committee activists today blocked Durgapur Expressway, the main link between Kolkata and Bardhaman, demanding the return of their land that was ''forcefully'' acquired from them for Tata's Small Cars Factory.

A 500-strong group of farmers, under the leadership of their Convener Becharam Manna and Singur AITC MLA Rabindranath Bhattacharya, today gathered at the busy Khasherchak Beltala road to protest against Calcutta High Court verdict and said that they continue their indefinite road blockade, until their demands were met.

Police sources said tension prevailed in the area. ''Our forces are keeping a close watch on the area. We have not yet asked the protestors to leave, but will take necessary action when the time comes,'' Hooghly SP Rajib Mishra.

''We will not move an inch until our demands are met,'' Mr Bhattacharya said. Trucks going to Tata's Small Cars Unit were being stopped, along with all other vehicles.

However, the emergency service vehicles are being allowed into Singur, police said and added that the trucks going to the plant are standing in a long queue.
