Imphal, Feb.8 : Hundreds of residents of Malom area located near Imphal's Tulihal airport recently staged a protest march against the expansion of the airport being done by acquiring their agricultural land. They said it would deprive them of their livelihood.
Residents criticized the authorities and went on a protest march from Malom to the State Assembly under the banner of Joint Action Committee (JAC) at Keishampat Junction in Imphal earlier this week.
Shouting slogans against the local authorities, the protesters said thousands of families' lives would be affected by expansion of the airport with the acquisitions of agricultural land.
"Inspite of our several appeals through local papers, the government has turned a deaf ear to our appeal. So, as the State Assembly session is on, we have come to approach the Governor in the presence of the Chief Minister, Ibobi Singh. They have failed to listen to our voice. We are bound to die due to acquisition of our agricultural lands," said Chitrani Devi, a resident.
"We, the villagers earn our sole livelihood from this agricultural field by cultivating. Not only us, more than one lakh of people too are earning their livelihood from these agricultural fields," said Suchitra Devi, another resident.
The protestors shouted slogans opposing the expansion of the Airport.
While heading towards the State legislature, the protestors were stopped by the security personnel, as the Assembly House was in session.
A delegation of the protestors, however, was later allowed. An assurance was given by the concerned officials that an amicable solution would be found to their problems. By L.C.K Singh
