Chandigarh, Feb 8 (UNI) Haryana Agricultural University has developed promising varieties of Bajra, wheat and peas, Vice-Chancellor Dr. J. C. Katyal aid here today.
These varieties, Bajra Hybrid HHB-197, Field Pea HFP 9426 and Wheat WH-1025, will prove a boon for the farmers as these are superior in qualities and there be no shortage of their seeds in the state, he told reporters here.
Highlighting the qualities of these newly-developed varieties, university's Director of Research, Dr .B. S. Chhillar said that HHB -197 of Bajara performed well under rain-fed as well as irrigated condition and was responsive to advance production technologies.
It was capable of yielding 50 quintal per hectare of grain and 100 quintal per hectare of fodder, he said adding that being early maturating, farmers could harvest crops with in 68-72 days.
HHB-197 was the only Hybrid which was tolerant to downy mildew, smut and ergot diseases, he added.
The field Pea variety HFP-9426, said the Director of Research, gives higher seed yield of 16 quintal per hectare and was resistant to powdery mildew and tolerant to root rot disease.
The wheat variety WH-1025 has been recommended for cultivation in state under rainfed and low input conditions.
He said that as compared to the earlier variety (C-306 ) for these conditions, WH-1025 contained much higher protein contents and is resistant to many crop diseases.
