Lucknow, Feb 8: a Congress MLA today resigned before the assembly speaker on the floor of the house, charging the Centre with not providing Uttar Pradesh with sufficient developmental funds.
Ajay Pratap Singh alias Lalla Bhaiyya, the Congress MLA from Karnalganj in Gonda district resigned from his seat on the floor of the house charging the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre with ignoring the state in developmental works. Speaker Sukhdev Rajbhar accepted his resignation.
There had been speculation since last fortnight that Lalla Bhaiyya could take this step, but the Congress leadership had maintained a silence. The MLA also resigned from the primary membership of the party.
The Karnalganj MLA had won the April, 2007 assembly elections while being in jail. After being elected he remained in the KGMU hospital for several months for treatment. He was released only ten days ago.
With this, the number of Congress MLAs has come down to 21 in the legislative assembly.
AICC general secretary in-charge of UP affairs Digvijay Singh is in the state capital for the election of a new Congress Legislature Party leader.
Officiating CLP leader Pramod Tiwari said the state government used strong arm tactics to their MLA resign.
