Madurai, Feb 7: The Left parties will stage a nationwide joint protest against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre for ''succumbing'' to pressure from the communal forces in the Ram Sethu issue.

Addressing a public meeting here last night, Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary D Pandian said he had spoken to CPI(M) State Secretary N Varadharajan in this regard and the Left-sponsored struggle would be finalised after discussing with leaders of both the parties tomorrow. He recalled Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's speech during the foundation stone laying function of the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project here that the the project had been approved by the Government and Rs 2,400 crore allotted to it.

He wanted to know whether the Centre had approved the project and allocated funds without thoroughly studying it.Demanding that the UPA Government and Congress clarify their stand on the issue before the Union Budget was presented on February 29, he said the Left parties would show their protest against the Union Ministers from Tamil Nadu as the Leftists were not ready to shake hands with those who had washed their hands off the project.
