With conducive weather, India expects a bumper wheat crop : Pawar
New Delhi, Feb 6 (UNI) Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar today said the country expected to harvest bumper wheat crop in the next two three months as prevailing weather was conducive for its proper growth and maturing.
The last year's wheat production has crossed 75 million tonnes mark and the current crop production would never be less than that, said Mr Pawar.
India which imported 5.5 million tonnes of wheat during 2005-06 has tapered down the imports to mere 2.1 million tonnes this year and will not go in for further imports in view of the coming bumper crop.
Mr Pawar said the Centre would soon finalise a compensatory package for the poultry farmers of West Bengal who were made to cull their birds in the wake of outbreak of contagious disease , avian flu.
