Solution to traffic congestion only if people use pub trpt: Haroon

New Delhi, Feb 6 (UNI) Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yousuf today said the solution to the problem of traffic congestion and limited road space in the capital could be solved only if people started using public transport extensively rather than depending on private vehicles.

Talking to reporters after flagging off new radio service "CHANSON" from North Avenue, the Minister said the capital had more than 45 lakh vehicles running on its road and about one lakh vehicles from neighbouring states entering everyday and also 650 new vehicles being registered every day.

All this puts immense pressure on the limited road space and one could not find a long term solution by expanding roads or making overbridges.

He said efficient, safe and sustainable public transport system could resolve all problems of transportation.

He assured that the government was committed to provide safe and pollution free public transport system.

The Minister said along with the expansion of the metro rail system, the state government was committed to put in place a High Capacity Bus System.

''In addition, the Mono-rail option for appropriate parts of the city is being examined to make world class transportation infrastructure and system that adhere to global best practices in terms of their user friendliness, safety, efficiency and sustainability,'' the Minister said.

Stating that the radio taxi was a more reliable and safe transportation service than any other mode of transport because of its GPS and GPRS technology, Mr Yousuf informed that approximately 1400 radio taxies were plying in the capital so far through 10 Radio Taxi Operators.
