Jagjivan Ram made historical contrution to agriculture: Meira

New Delhi, Feb 6 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will deliver the inaugural address at a seminar orghanised here tomorrow to acknowledge former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram's contribution to the country's agriculture.

Tomorrow's event is part of the late dalit leader's birth centenary celebrations.

Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Meira Kumar told a press conference here that the theme of the seminar was 'Agricultural Revolutions, Inclusive Growth and State Policies'.

She said the topic has been chosen in view of the great service done to agriculture by Babu Jagjivan Ram as Food and Agriculture Minister during 1967-70.

She said the late leader pulled the country out of the clutches of severe drought, was instrumental in heralding the Green Revolution and making India self-sufficient in food.

Ms Kumar, who is also the daughter of the late leader, said the various programme in his memory were being organised by the Babu Jagjivan Ram Centenary Celebration Committee headed by former President of India R Venkataraman with former prime ministers VP Singh and IK Gujral as its patrons.

Members of the committee are Sushil Shinde, Ram Vilas Paswan, Mahavir Prasad, PR Kydiah, Bali Ram Bhagat, Dr Karan Singh, Bhishm Narain Singh, Brinda Karat, M S Swaminathan, Shabana Azmi, Prof Sukhdev Thorat, Amar Jalan, Sunil Kant Munjal, Sunil Bharti Mittal, VN Dalmia, AR Sonthalia and Jagmohan Singh.Mr Ashul Avijit is the convenor.
