Devotees take dip in sea on 'Thai Amavasya'
Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Feb 6 (UNI) Thousands of devotees from various parts of the country took a holy dip in the sea off the coast here on the occasion of "Thai Amavasya," (new moon in the Tamil month of 'Thai').
The belief is the souls of forefathers visit the earth to bless their descendents.
At the historic Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, thousands of people visited the 'Agnitheertha Kadarkarai' (sea shore) to offer poojas to forefathers.
Special prayers were also offered to 'Navagrahas' at Navapashanam - Devipattinam.
A procession carrying the idols of Lord Shiva, Lord Ram and Sita from the temple reached 'Agnitheertha Kadarkarai' for special poojas.
In North India, the day is observed as "Mauni Amavasya" when many Hindus observe complete silence for a day.
