Shillong, Feb 06: The Meghalaya government has issued an order that all illegal toll gates erected along the National Highways and Public Works Department roads should be dismantled.
The East Khasi Hills district administration has termed all the check gates put up by various departments, District Councils, Shillong Municipal Board, Himas and others as 'unauthorized' and 'illegal'.
Talking to reporters here, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner B Dhar said all the existing toll gates on National Highways and PWD roads in the district were 'illegal'.
''We have directed the police to register a case and arrest the collectors of such check gates,'' Mr Dhar said, while pointing out that as per detailed survey conducted by the district administration, all toll gates put up by various authorities along NHs and PWD roads were illegal as none of them did not obtained permission from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway and state PWD.
Earlier, truckers had lodged compliant with the district authorities on the exorbitant 'tax' charged by these toll gates, most of which are being operated by lessees.
